The Austersee ( Romanian Lacul oyster ) is a natural salt-water lake near the small town of Ocna Sibiului in Sibiu county in the region of Transylvania in Romania . It is one of the many lakes of the Ocna Sibiului Salt Mine , a salt mine with one of the largest salt reserves in Romania.

Surname

Lacul Auster means the ascetic lake in Romanian. Sometimes it is also called Lacul Austel or Lacul cu insula (the lake with the island ). In the past it was also called Lacul Roșu (the red lake) because of its reddish color that it has lost.

history

The oyster lake was created on the site of an old, unlicensed salt works . In 1922, its water level was much higher than it is today, and it was lowered by artificial drainage because its waters were believed to flood the Ignațiu Salt Mine, which was in operation.
