from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Australia Party (AP) was a small Australian party that existed in the 1960s / 70s. Members of the Australia Party opposed their country's participation in the Vietnam War and the liberal conscription policy . The main character in founding the party was the Australian businessman and political activist Gordon Barton .

history

The Australia Party emerged from the Liberal Reform Group , a group that broke away from the renowned Liberal Party of Australia . When it was named in 1969, the party also attracted disappointed members of the Australian Labor Party . The AP participated in both state and federal elections. The Australia Party achieved its best election results in 1972 at the height of the Vietnam War, but without winning any seat. In the 1974 and 1975 elections, the initial successes could not be confirmed and the trend was negative. Most supporters therefore preferred to switch to the Australian Democrats founded by Liberal Minister Don Chipp in view of the 1977 federal elections . Then the Australia Party broke up.
