Australian Maritime College

The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is an institute of the University of Tasmania in Launceston . It is Australia's national center for marine research and education.

The aims of the AMC are to provide further education, training and advice of the highest quality as well as to conduct research in the maritime field at an international level.

The AMC has two branches 50 km apart in northern Tasmania, in Newham and Beauty Point , each with different facilities.

The AMC trains the following three groups:

Newham Campus

The AMC's largest campus is in Newham, six kilometers from Launceston . The institute administration and the Faculty of Sea Transport and Engineering are located here. I.a. here are also the towing tank , a ship's hull test basin and a cavitation tunnel .

Investigator Hall

The Investigator Hall is a dormitory for both AMC and University of Tasmania students . It was named after Matthew Flinders' ship , the HMS Investigator .

Beauty Point Campus

The National Center for Ports and Shipping is located on the Beauty Point Campus. Also. it houses a water flow channel (which burned in 2008), seafood, microbiology and chemistry laboratories, and student research facilities.

Endeavor Hall

The Endeavor Hall is the AMC's dormitory on the Beauty Point Campus. It was named after the ship HMS Endeavor of James Cook named.

The Australian Maritime College has its own fleet of ships. The ships include:

  • FTV Bluefin
  • FTV Reviresco
  • TV Pinduro (AMC Search)
  • Skipjack
  • Seahorse
  • RV Stephen Brown

Unity project

The AMC and the University of Tasmania , both of which are represented on the Newham Campus, started the Unity project. This project examined whether it would make sense to combine the two institutes.

On October 16, 2007, the Maritime Amendment Bill was approved, which resolved the integration of the AMC as an institute within the University of Tasmania . However, the AMC still retains its own identity and a certain degree of autonomy.
