Austria March

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austria March is a march by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 20). The work was first performed on April 19, 1846 on the occasion of a military parade.

Remarks

In 1845, Johann Strauss Sohn was appointed as the successor to the late Josef Lanner as the conductor, albeit without a salary, of the band of the 2nd regiment of the Vienna Civil Guard. So he was again in competition with his father , who directed the regimental band of the 1st Viennese vigilante group. Otherwise, both father and son played with their own dance orchestras. On April 19, 1846, on the occasion of an emperor's jubilee, a military parade took place in which both bands of the Viennese vigilante groups participated and the rival conductors of the two bands met. To underline the national character of the event, the younger Strauss composed the Austria March , which was also played at the parade.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 7 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
