Budding (printing technology)

Blow-out is a term used in printing technology.

If you fold a large number of sheets of paper of the same length and width in the middle, you will notice that the innermost pages on the now open side protrude slightly beyond the format of the outermost page (envelope). If a layout is printed on the folded paper sheets (magazine, magazine, etc.), the type area would shift from sheet to sheet towards the center and further outwards. In order to avoid this, the so-called expulsion is calculated in the prepress stage . The pages are automatically shifted a little further by an imposition software until they are exactly on top of each other in the stapled end product when closed (are in register ).

In order to calculate the strength of the sprouting, you fold a dummy of the desired product (important: exact page number and paper to be used) and now measure the distance between the cover and the innermost sheet on the top or bottom edge (see picture).
