Awards for good buildings in the city of Zurich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The awards for good buildings in the city of Zurich are since 1947 as architectural awards the City of Zurich awarded. In award periods of initially three and then five years, buildings from 1945 to 2010 have been honored in a total of 16 judges. A total of 192 buildings had been awarded by 2010. On September 15, 2016, the awards for the best buildings from 2011 to 2015 were presented for the 17th time in the Zurich City Hall.

After a monetary award was initially awarded, today the prize is not associated with monetary or material benefits, but a plaque and a certificate are awarded. A total of 153 awards were given in the first 50 years of the award up to 1995. No figures are available about the share of the total construction activity, however, as an example of the award period from 1968 to 1971, the city council's minutes say: “In accordance with the guidelines, 120 new buildings from a directory drawn up by the building construction department had to be carried out by the Judged by the jury. " Eleven buildings were then awarded during this period.

The history of the award goes back to 1943, when, on the occasion of the expansion of the city's literature award into an art award with various categories, the Federation of Swiss Architects suggested creating an architecture award as well. Funded by the city architect Steiner , the prize was then decided by the local council in February 1947 and awarded for the first time.
