Autavia was a sport in Switzerland in the 1920s and 1930s that involved airplanes and automobiles.

Emergence

Aero clubs in Switzerland organized the Autavia events together with automobile clubs from the Zurich, Bern, Basel, Geneva and Ticino sections. The cutting-edge technology of the time was used by airplanes, automobiles and radio.

The sport is similar to balloon tracking, in which automobiles had to chase a hot air balloon on the ground from the turn of the century until the 1910s.

Autavia is made up of AUT from Automobile and AVIA from Aviation .

course

One plane and two cars each formed a team. The aircraft crews had to look for two command posts in the area, which were marked with large crosses on the ground. The automobiles had to drive up to the two posts and deliver a dispatch. The planes transmitted the coordinates by radio. One car served post one, the other post two. The sum of the travel times of both cars from the start to the dispatch of the dispatch resulted in the competition time of the team.
