Automatic x-ray inspection

The automatic X-ray inspection ( English automated X-ray inspection , AXI) is a testing the components fitted to the control circuit boards is used. It belongs to the area of automatic optical inspection (AOI). Instead of light, however, X-rays are evaluated here, which makes internal structures of electronic components such as contacts, connecting wires and soldering points visible.

The test with AXI is also often combined with a simultaneous AOI test.

In the case of chip housings such as the Ball Grid Array , the connections to the printed circuit board cannot be fully detected optically. An X-ray inspection with low intensity is an option to check the electrical contacts. AXI can detect errors such as open connections, short circuits, insufficient soldering quantity, too much solder, missing parts, twisted components, etc. The evaluation of the x-ray images can also be carried out automatically in series using appropriate image processing programs. This means that defective assemblies can be found quickly and repaired within a short time.

These test systems are more expensive than normal optical test systems, but they can also test all connections.
