The Avakas Gorge ( Greek : Φαραγγι Αβακα , English Avakas Gorge ) is a gorge in the Paphos district of Cyprus .

location

The gorge is located about 20 km north of the district capital Paphos in the southwest of the Akamas peninsula . The paved road stops about 3 km off the ravine in Agios Georgios Pegeia and turns into a gravel road.

useful information

The Avakas Gorge begins about 1 km before the confluence of the small Avgas River into the Mediterranean Sea and leads inland. It has a length of about 3 km and is partly only about 4 m wide with over 30 m high rock walls. The little river had over the course of millennia by the limestone milled. When it rains like a torrent, the Avgas becomes a raging body of water due to the narrowness of the gorge. Warning signs at the entrance to the gorge point this out to hikers. The way back can either be taken through the gorge or a path outside, which, however, extends over a length of 10 km.

The Avakas Gorge is characterized by a variety of plants. In addition to pines, cypresses, juniper berries and wild fig trees, Centauria akamantis , a native plant that only grows here, thrives here.
