Avala ( Serbian Cyrillic. Авала) is the name of a 511  m high mountain about 18 km south of the city center of Belgrade . The tree-rich mountain has been a nature reserve since 1859. In the Middle Ages , the mountain was a strategically important point from which the access to Belgrade could be controlled. 1938 was on the top of Avala Mausoleum to commemorate the Serbian hero of the First World War built. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is the work of Ivan Meštrović . Not far from the mausoleum there is a memorial to the Soviet war veterans. On the Avala stands the Avala television tower named after the mountain , which was destroyed in a NATO air strike in 1999 and rebuilt in 2009.
