from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Andry sy Rihana Enti-Manavotra an'i Madagasikara ( German  Association for the Rebirth of Madagascar , French Association pour la renaissance de Madagascar , abbreviation AREMA ) is a political party in Madagascar .

The party's national general secretary is Pierrot Rajaonarivelo and the interim national secretary is Pierre Houlder Ramaholimasy .

history

The party was founded on March 19, 1976 as a pro- Soviet party by President Didier Ratsiraka . She held the majority of the seats in parliament until the fall of his military regime in 1991.

In the Senate elections on March 18, 2001, AREMA again won 49 of the 60 seats.

In the Malagasy parliamentary elections on December 15, 2002, the party won only 4.9% of the popular vote and thus only 3 of the 160 seats in the National Assembly of Madagascar , all three in the Toamasina province .

The incumbent National Secretary General of the party, Pierrot Rajaonarivelo, was elected at the party congress on November 29, 1977. However, he went into exile in France in 2002 and was convicted in absentia; since then he has been represented by Ramaholimasy.

The party is currently split into two factions: the supporters of Rajaonarivelos on the one hand and the supporters of party founder Ratsiraka on the other.

Rajaonarivelo wanted to run for the presidential election in December 2006, but was not allowed to enter Madagascar.

The Ratsiraka faction, however, considered boycotting the parliamentary elections in September 2007, in contrast to the participating Rajoanarivelo faction. The Ratsiraka faction wanted to prevent the Rajaonativelo faction from participating, but the High Constitutional Court allowed AREMA to participate. The party did not win a seat in the election.
