Abbas-Ali Chalatbari ( Persian عباسعلی خلعتبری; * 1912 in Tehran ; † April 11, 1979 ibid) was a Persian ambassador and foreign minister .

Life

Abbas-Ali Chalatbari studied political science and received his doctorate in law from the Sorbonne . He joined the foreign service in 1942. From March 7, 1960 to 1962 he was ambassador to Warsaw . From 1962 to 1968 he was Secretary General of the Central Treaty Organization . From 1968 to January 14, 1973 he was deputy to Ardeshir Zahedi, whom he replaced on January 14, 1978 as Foreign Minister in the government cabinet of Jamschid Amusegar . In 1977 he visited Israel at the invitation of Jigal Allon . On February 26, 1978, he visited Mengistu Haile Mariam . From April 27 to May 1, 1978 he visited King Hassan II of Morocco.

After the overthrow of the Shah's government, Chalatbari refused to leave Iran. He was arrested and sentenced to death on charges of corruption and treason following the 1979 Islamic Revolution . He and ten other high ministers of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi were executed by the security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran on April 11, 1979. His execution was followed by a wave of global protests.
