The pilgrimage church and the Capuchin monastery Ave Maria (also Ave Maria (Tugstein) ) are located in the Upper Filstal in the Deggingen district in the Göppingen district . The late baroque complex is a bit off the federal highway 466 and is easy to reach from Geislingen an der Steige and Wiesensteig . The pilgrimage church and the Capuchin monastery belong to the parish of the Holy Cross in Deggingen. Four other Capuchin brothers work together with a priest in pastoral care in the pilgrimage church and in the vicinity of the monastery.

The pilgrimage church was built between 1716 and 1718. Two centuries later, in 1929, the pastoral work was entrusted to the Capuchins , and three years later the monastery was built.

The furnishings of Ave Maria show rich stucco ornamentation and artistic paintings. In the center is the high altar, which is the showpiece of Ave Maria. He is surrounded by cheering angels and holds the image of grace in the middle. This late Gothic Madonna is the work of an unknown artist from the 15th century.

The pilgrimage church of Ave Maria is used by many bridal couples to celebrate their church wedding.

Christmas crib in Ave Maria

Christmas crib in Ave Maria

Since the 1950s, a magnificent nativity scene measuring several square meters has been set up every year at the beginning of Advent in Ave Maria. The crib, which consists of many filigree details, was mainly made from natural materials such as tree bark, roots, moss and cork. The forty hand-made figures are from a Sicilian artist, the background painting from a Schwangau painter. A stream flows through the nativity scene and flows into a small lake with goldfish in the foreground of the facility.

In 2007 the nativity scene was completely restored. It remains set up over the Christmas holidays and in January and can be viewed outside of the service times.
