Avenida Afonso Costa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Avenida Afonso Costa is a main road in the northern center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It was built in the mid-1970s as part of a higher-level road system to bypass the center and leads in multiple lanes as an extension of Avenida João XXI from Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro to Rotunda das Olaias. To the east of Praça Francisco Sá Carneiro , the Túnel da Avenida João XXI joins.

history

The street was given the name of the law professor and three-time prime minister Afonso Costa (1871-1937) by decision of the Câmara Municipal (city council) of Lisbon on December 30, 1976 . Two and a half years after the Carnation Revolution (April 25, 1974), it was a reminder of one of the key figures in the building of the First Republic . The city's street naming commission had originally decided on June 29, 1976 to name a road connection north of Parque Eduardo VII between Avenida Sidónio Pais and Rua Castilho (today: Alameda Cardeal Cerejeira) to Costa. However, this decision was never implemented.
