Avernum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avernum is a six-part series of computer role-playing games for Macintosh and Windows computers that feature epic stories. They are distributed online by Spiderweb Software; a demo version is available for each part, which contains around a third of the playing time of the full version. The Avernum games are mainly set in an underground cave world and are presented in an isometric view.

The first three parts are a remake of the Exile trilogy, also by developer Jeff Vogel. Blades of Avernum is chronologically located after Avernum 3 and allows you to play stories from other players that were created with the included editor. Part Six concludes the series and was released in 2009 for the Macintosh and 2010 for Windows.

action

The series begins with a group created by the player who is banished from the “Empire” - the only ruling power on the surface - through a magical portal to Avernum. Avernum is a cave system deep underground, lit by luminous mushrooms, populated by anthromorphic lizards and cats, giant talking spiders, dragons and more. In the course of the plot, the player enters the service of the local leader of the people, searches for a way back to the surface and murders the emperor there.

Five years later the Empire tries to take action against Avernum and meets the "Vahnatai", the natives of Avernum, who were in a deep sleep. They steal these valuable crystals, for which the Vahnatai blame the inhabitants of Avernum. The group controlled by the player contacts them and mediates, whereupon the two parties join forces against the Empire and drive it out of the caves.

After another four years of careful preparation, the residents of Avernum decide to send scouting parties to the surface. Once there, they find that the Empire has been weakened by plagues and dark forces. As a last resort, the Empire will seek help from the player's group. Successful cooperation brings peace for a long time.

Gameplay

At the beginning of each game, the player creates a group of up to six characters, only the selection of races from Avernum 2 has an influence on the dialogues.

Similar to Ultima 8 , the game is controlled entirely from an isometric perspective, time only passes as soon as an action is carried out. As soon as the player encounters hostile beings, it changes to a turn-based combat mode.
