Avon and Gloucestershire Railway

The Avon and Gloucestershire Railway was a British railway company based in Gloucestershire .

The company obtained the right to build a 4-foot, 8-inch tramway on June 19, 1828 . The 8.5-kilometer route led from the banks of the Avon above Keynsham north to the coal mines on Rodway Hill in Mangotsfield .

The line was built with financial support from the Bristol and Gloucestershire Railway and was owned by the Kennet and Avon Canal Company. A first 4 km long section was usable on January 10, 1831, the remaining part with the connection to the Br & GR was put into operation on June 5.

With the takeover of the canal by the Great Western Railway on July 1, 1851, the railway company also came to GWR.
