Ax blow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A notch at the transition from the neck to the withers in horses is called an ax blow .

Horse with ax blow

In some horse breeds, such as thoroughbreds , a strongly pronounced ax blow due to the high spinous processes on the withers is breed- related. A low neck also results in a recognizable ax blow.

With proper training and the muscles built up as a result (in particular the pars cervicalis of the trapezius muscle ), the ax blow can be reduced or even completely trained. A well trained horse should therefore only have a minimally recognizable ax blow.
