The Ayam pelung or Pelung is a breed of long crows chickens from West Java . The large and heavy breed emerged in the 19th century from the Ayam kampung , the Indonesian country chicken .

history

According to a local narrative, Jarkasih (also called Mama Atschi), a farmer and mystic from Cianjur, found some chicks in his back yard that were growing exceptionally quickly. A chicken would have had a huge stature after seven months and would have attracted attention with its strong and long crow cry . From around 1850 the offspring of this rooster were bred and were given the name Ayam pelung , which means bent chicken in the local dialect . The name comes from the roosters' ability to bend forward with their upper bodies when crowing. As with the bekisar Ayam , were with the ayam pelung betting crows held, which have further increased the lovers in the breed.

features

Typical features are the drawn out, sonorous crow call, which can last up to eleven seconds, the extraordinarily large and fleshy standing comb, which continues over the beak, the red face and the raised shape. The body weight of the adult roosters is 3.5 to seven kilograms with a size of 40 to 50 cm. The hens are smaller, weighing two to three kilograms. The usual colors are gold-red-black and cream-black on the taps.

use

The hobby breeding is very popular mainly on West Java and finds its climax with the annual competition crows in Cianjur. Due to its considerable body weight, the Pelung plays an important role in local chicken meat production, although the weight gain in the first few weeks of life is less than that of modern broilers.
