Long crows are domestic chickens that are characterized by an extended courtship call. The rooster crows continuously for up to 20 seconds, depending on the breed.

distribution

The representatives of the long crows belong to the most traditional chicken breeds and have been bred for centuries in Central Europe, the Balkans, Asia Minor, Russia, China, Japan and in the south of East Asia and are still used today in competition crows . Accordingly, they belong to the respective local cultural property. They were also spread in South America. However, some of them are very rare or even threatened with extinction. The Bergische Kräher is on the joint red list of endangered livestock breeds of the Federation of German Racial Poultry Breeders (BDRG), the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Pet Breeds (GEH) and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE).

origin

In early publications, it was suggested that the long crows descended from a common Chinese domestic chicken. Crossbreeding attempts and molecular investigations suggest, however, that the prolonged crow call was repeatedly formed and further developed in breeding independently of one another.

Europe

Crossing experiments showed that Bergischer Kräher and Bosnian Kräher , the southeast European Berat , have a common origin. However, the Turkish Denizli Crow is the result of an independent development. In addition, the calls of the races are structured in different ways: the Bergische Kräher shows an extended call as a whole, with the last syllable being lengthened the most. The call of the Denizli rooster is only extended to the last syllable, the first three have been shortened. The calls of the Bergisch and the Berat crow, however, do not differ in call length, voice or course.

Japan

The Japanese long crows Shôkoku , Tôtenkô and Koeyoshi can be traced back to the Chinese Changkuo crows, which were introduced to Japan between the 8th and 12th centuries.

The Japanese Tômaru , however, are in no way related to the other Japanese long crane breeds. Their origins, as well as that of the Pelung and other Indonesian long crane races, are unclear. Their classification in the kinship biological system of the domestic chicken indicates an independent, completely independent development.

Russia

For the two Russian breeds Jurlower Kräher and Akhal Tekkiner , a relationship with the European group around Bergische Kräher and Berat, as well as with Chinese ancestors, the Changkuo, is conceivable.
