After his protective custody in the Börgermoor concentration camp , he took on advisory tasks in Solingen on April 4, 1934 without appearing directly, as he was known to the police. In 1934 Ernst brought Bertram to Wuppertal to rebuild the KPD and its organizations there. In 1935 he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Wuppertal trade union trial, later he was sent to the Lüttringhausen prison . After his release he volunteered for the bomb detonation squad to remove duds after air raids. On June 20, 1943 he was killed in a bomb detonation in Düsseldorf .
