Country chicken is a general term for native land breeds of domestic chicken . The term became common at the end of the 19th century to emphasize the different characteristics of the old European races ("land races") compared to the then newly introduced Asian and American races. The original European chicken breeds are usually higher, slimmer and lighter than the heavier and more rounded Asian breeds and the related American breeds. The characteristics are collectively referred to as "typical country fowl shape ".

The term “country chicken” is also used in advertising for organic chicken breeding, but here without considering the original meaning.
