Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle , formerly often called Aydon Hall , is a fortified mansion in the village of Aydon near Corbridge in the English county of Northumberland . It is a Scheduled Monument and English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.

Details

Documents show that a wooden house was initially built at this point. The manor house was then built by Robert de Reymes , a wealthy Suffolk merchant , from 1296 onwards on the steep valley of Cor Burn . At that time the building consisted of a two-story hall house with solar (a hall for use by the owner's family), a dining room and a kitchen on the upper floor. In 1305 he received a royal permit to fortify his mansion (English: "License to crenellate") and had battlements put up and the property enclosed with a curtain wall. The house was taken by the Scots in 1315 and again in 1346. The manor house was renovated in the middle of the 16th century and converted into a farm in the middle of the 17th century. It remained in use as a farm until 1966 and then renovated and restored its medieval appearance. It is managed by English Heritage.
