Ayolas is a city and a district in the Misiones department in the Republic of Paraguay .

The city is located on the Paraná River on the border with Argentina , approx. 45 m above sea level and has around 12,400 inhabitants (2006 calculation) . It bears the name of the Spanish conquistador Juan de Ayolas . The Yacyretá hydropower plant on the Río Parana, which is operated jointly with Argentina, is located near the city . In the course of the construction of the hydropower plant, the Villa Permanente district was created as a settlement for the construction workers and workers of the power plant .
