Azuma-shima ( Japanese 吾 妻 島 ) is an artificial island off Yokosuka . In contrast to the other artificial islands in Tokyo Bay , it was not created as a result of landfills, but in 1889 as a result of the construction of a canal through the former Hakozaki Peninsula ( 箱 崎 半島 , Hakozaki-hantō ), which thus became an island. Nominally, the island forms the Hakozaki-chō district of Yokosuka, but is subject to the jurisdiction of the United States Navy .

The highest point is the 87 m high Azuma-yama ( 吾 妻 山 ).

Until the Meiji period , the peninsula was inhabited and an anchorage on the sea route to Edo (now Tokyo ), although it was feared for its hidden reefs. In 1882 part of the peninsula was acquired by the Imperial Japanese Army , which built coastal defense batteries here, and further parts in 1900 by the navy , who built a signaling and meteorological station here, making the current island a restricted military area and part of the Yokosuka naval base has been. After the war it was requisitioned by the United States Navy on September 2, 1945 and is now part of the US Naval Base Yokosuka ( Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka ), the headquarters of the United States Seventh Fleet, as Azuma Storage Area .

To the west and southwest is Nagaura Bay ( 長 浦 湾 , Nagaura-wan ) along which the naval base of the Japanese sea self- defense forces extends.
