Bäumer B IVa with the identification D-1414

The Bäumer B IV Sausewind was a single - engine low - wing aircraft that was developed and built by Bäumer Aero GmbH in the 1920s.

development

After the flying successes of the Bäumer B II , the brothers Siegfried and Walter Günter , Walter Mertens and Werner Meyer-Cassel developed the B IV. Outwardly, it was very similar to the B II, but was largely a new design. It was safe to fly even by inexperienced pilots. The aerodynamic changes alone made it possible to increase the top speed by 25 km / h to 210 km / h with the same 65 hp engine. In 1926 and 1927 only two aircraft were manufactured. They bore the registration numbers D-885 and D-1158. In 1928 the B IVa (D-1414) was built.

Paul Bäumer himself took off on June 1, 1927 with the second B IV (D-1158) for its maiden flight . On July 15, 1927, it crashed during a demonstration flight with the Rohrbach Rofix near Kastrup Airport . He was killed in the process.

After his death, Bäumer Aero GmbH continued the development of the B IV and began building the D IVa in September 1927. This aircraft was sold to the Hamburger Luftverkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH on March 16, 1929 . After its bankruptcy , the B IVa was sold on in June. The new owner fell with the machine after a daring flight maneuver in the Pötenitzer Wiek near Travemünde . The plane was destroyed, but the pilot got away with the horror.

Records

  • On July 8, 1927, Bäumer set a new world altitude record of 6,782 m.
  • On July 10, 1927, together with copilot Friedrich Puls, he set a speed record in the “two-seater” category. They flew a 100 km long measurement route with an average of 191.2 km / h.
  • Ernst Petersen and Dr.-Ing. Werner von Langsdorff set a new speed record for light aircraft on October 4, 1928 with 214 km / h.
