Béthioua

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Béthioua ( Arabic بطيوة, formerly Arzew , under French colonial rule Vieil Arzew , then called Saint-Leu ) is a city in the province of Oran in northwestern Algeria . It has gas pipelines, petrochemical plants and desalination plants.

The city of Arzew arose on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Portus Magnus . Until July 1834, Vieil Arzew consisted of a few hundred dilapidated houses, the 400 inhabitants came from Berber tribes from Morocco. When the French approached the city, Abd el-Kader took them and drove the residents inland. In 1846 the French founded a settlement in Vieil Arzew and named it Saint-Leu.

During the British-American invasion of French North Africa in November 1942 ( Operation Torch ) , during the Second World War , American troops who captured Oran landed on “Beach Z”, the coastal strip between Arzew and Saint-Leu.

Since the independence of Algeria in 1962, Saint-Leu has been called Béthioua.
