Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange

The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange ( DSE , German: Börse Daressalam) is the only exchange in Tanzania . It is based in the Tanzanian metropolis Dar es Salaam and was founded in 1996. However, the first day of trading was only in April 1998.

It was one of the smallest exchanges in the world from the start. On the first day of trading, only one company was listed, Tanzania Oxygen Ltd. The market capitalization at the end of the first day of trading was just 10.15 million US dollars. The Tanzanian Shillings are traded on the stock exchange. Foreign investors have also been allowed to trade on the stock exchange since October 2002. The trading center is open for half an hour every Wednesday morning.

The four listed companies, all from Tanzania, are: Tanzania Breweries Ltd. , Tanzania Cigarette Co. , Tanzania Tea Packers Ltd. and TOL Limited .
