The Pen y Fan [ pɛnəˈvan ] is the highest point in South Wales with a height of 886  m .

The mountain is part of the Brecon Beacons mountain range in the Brecon Beacons National Park and consists of Old Red sandstone from the Devonian with strong traces from the last Ice Age .

In addition to British special forces training on the mountain, the area is regularly used by hikers and participants in the annual Pen-y-Fan run. The National Trust is working to stop the ongoing erosion of the site.

Tommy Jones Obelisk

On the way to the summit there is an obelisk in memory of five-year-old Tommy Jones, who died here in August 1900. Tommy Jones, son of a miner in Rhondda , got lost at Cwm Llwch Farmhouse when he was returning home from visiting his grandparents. The place where his body was found after a 29-day search was marked by this obelisk, which has served hikers as a guide ever since.

The inscription on the obelisk reads:

“This obelisk marks the spot where the body of Tommy Jones, aged 5, was found. He lost his way between Cwm Llwch farm and the Login on the night of August 4, 1900. After an anxious search of 29 days his remains were discovered on September 1. Erected by voluntary subscription. W. Powell Price Mayor of Brecon 1901 ”

However, it remained inexplicable how the boy could get to this height.
