The penitent hat ( Chinese:高帽子 gāo màozi or 高帽 gāomào) is a high cap made of paper (similar in shape to an upside-down German school cone ) used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during its political campaigns from so-called land reform to so-called cultural revolution unpleasant people, z. B. dissidents , were put on to drive them so disfigured through the streets, with the ostensible purpose of recognizing the injustice they have committed, but actually to humiliate them publicly and to break their will.
