The Bürgerhaus Langenberg in Velbert-Langenberg is a cultural and event building that was donated for the citizens of the city.

history

Several houses in Langenberg had been demolished to widen the main street in 1910. Because of the steeply sloping slope, there were no interested parties to rebuild the land. Adalbert Colsman and Sophie Colsman b. In 1913, Feldhoff made an offer to the city of Langenberg to donate a large sum of money, with the condition that a “community center” be built at this location. They had already had their architect Arno Eugen Fritsche work out their first drafts. The building should be available to the citizens of the city as a festival and meeting room, for education, culture and sport. The city council accepted this gift and Fritsche was given the task of further planning. Due to the First World War, completion was delayed until 1917. Sports clubs, the community choir and the community house orchestra were permanent users of the house. According to the donors' wishes, the use of the house was free. During the Second World War, the community center was used as a hospital at times. Various alterations were made over the years. A planned asbestos removal was the starting point for the detection of considerable construction defects and damage, which led to the closure of the house in 2006. The reopening took place in April 2016 after a long renovation phase.
