BAZ-5937 / BAZ-5939
As BAZ-5937 / BAZ-5939 ( Russian БАЗ-5937 / БАЗ-5939 ) basic vehicle types from Soviet production are designated, which were designed for the transport of special military loads.
history
The original plan was to manufacture the Osa air defense system on the basis of a lightly armored tracked vehicle, but this was discarded due to various problems. The Brjanski Awtomobilny Sawod (BAZ for short) was commissioned to design and produce a vehicle that would meet the requirements of the military. At this plant, development work was already underway based on the ZIL-135 heavy truck to develop a vehicle family for tactical missiles. This resulted in the vehicle family BAZ-5921 / BAZ-5922 ( SS-21 Scarab ), BAZ-5937 / BAZ-5939 ( 9K33 Osa ) and the four-axle BAZ-6944 ( SS-23 Spider ). All vehicle variants are amphibious and are characterized by high mobility and off-road driving properties. The BAZ-5937 and the BAZ-5939 are unarmored. The attempt to attach additional armor failed because the buoyancy was no longer guaranteed.
The carrier vehicle BAZ-5937 was developed as the basis for air defense systems in the Soviet Union in the 1960s. In addition to Russia , the vehicle is used by Poland , Syria , Cuba , Kuwait , Jordan , Iraq and Greece . The Greek vehicles are former NVA units that were transferred from Germany to Greece after the collapse of the GDR and the associated dissolution of the NVA .
The BAZ-5937 is used both as a carrier for anti-aircraft missiles (9K33 Osa) and as a slightly modified version BAZ-5939 (1987) with a hood-like structure, under which there is a hydraulic crane, as a reloading vehicle for the Osa system.
Technical specifications
With the 9K33 Osa air defense system installed, the BAZ-5937 is 9.14 m long, 2.9 m wide and (when the search radar is not extended ) 4.2 m high. The total weight is 18.6 t. The vehicle is occupied by three men.
Both the BAZ-5937 and the BAZ-5939 are powered by a 5D20B-300 four-stroke diesel engine that achieves an output of 220 kW (310 hp) at 2600 rpm. This means that it is able to overcome inclines of 58%. The vehicle climbs over 0.5 m high obstacles and crosses those two meters wide.
Due to its amphibious design, the vehicle is fully floatable. The maximum speed on land is 60 km / h and in water 5 km / h. Depending on the terrain, the range is around 500 km. The occupants are protected from attacks with chemical or biological warfare agents as well as from radiation by an NBC protection device .
An infrared driving and night vision device is installed as standard. The vehicle is all-wheel drive , the power is transmitted to six wheels.
