BD-J

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BD-J stands for Blu-ray Disc Java and describes a system that enables the storage and execution of interactive applications on a Blu-ray Disc .

As part of the Blu-ray Disc specification, an interactive application layer has been defined that includes applications such as an interactive film menu (similar to the previous DVD menus), additional interactive information, games, interactive films (e.g. films with several storylines) and To enable advertising and shopping services with return channel access. The application layer is based on the Java variant called BD-J , a modification of the Multimedia Home Platform or the GEM specification ( Globally Executable MHP ). BD-J will be implemented on every Blu-ray Disc compatible device that can play Blu-ray Disc movies.

Technology (compared to the Multimedia Home Platform)

Unlike the Multimedia Home Platform , the BD-J format does not provide access to broadcast services. Instead, the applications are stored on the Blu-ray medium along with other audio and video information. By accessing playlists, the BD-J applications can play back specific audio and video sequences. Since the Blu-ray Disc enables the playback of HD videos, BD-J applications also support HD resolutions. A mechanism for accessing fonts (fonts) that has been expanded compared to the MHP allows the automatic loading of fonts used by applications from the Blu-ray Disc medium. BD-J applications still have access to an IP-based return channel, provided the BD drive is connected to a corresponding network.

Homebrew on the Playstation 3

The homebrew scene had succeeded in getting homebrew up and running on the PlayStation 3 through the BD-J format . Starting with a simple Snake clone, even the first is NES - emulator released. However, this option was closed some time ago, so that from firmware version 2.50 it is no longer possible to run BD-J Homebrew.
