HDR image format

BEF is a proprietary file format of Unified Color and was specially developed for high dynamic range images . The BEF format stores image information based on human vision (full gamut ), which allows the range of contrasts to be displayed within an image of any natural scene. This means that BEF files are free from so-called clipping , i.e. the conversion of all tone values above or below a certain gray level into white or black. BEF supports both the 32-bit floating point architecture with 96 bits per pixel and the integer coding with 32 bits per pixel.

Another feature is compression. In contrast to most image formats, with the BEF format the loss of quality caused by compression is linked to an objective quality metric. Instead of subjectively setting the image quality between "low" and "high", Unified Color uses the differential perceptibility threshold . Image compression can be set on a scale from 0.1 to 5 visible errors. A value of ≤1.0 means that the difference perceived by the human eye is at or up to the threshold of visible distinctness. In other words, no difference can be seen with the naked eye. A value of> 1.0 represents the factor of visible distinctness.
