description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe koenenii grows trunk-forming, branched from the base and forms dense, extensive groups. The prostrate trunks reach a length of 40 to 50 centimeters. The 20 to 30 leaves are erect or ascending. The glaucous green, tinged purple leaf blade is 40 centimeters long and 4 to 9 centimeters wide. Young plants are spotted white. The fixed teeth on the edge of the leaf are 2 to 3 millimeters long and 5 to 10 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence consists of up to four branches and reaches a length of up to 120 centimeters. The rather dense, cylindrical grapes are up to 35 centimeters long. The bracts have a length of 5 to 8 millimeters. The cylindrical-bulbous, carmine-red flowers stand on stiff, 2 to 3 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 25 to 28 millimeters long. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 4 millimeters. Above that, they are expanded to 7 millimeters in the middle and finally narrowed towards the mouth. The stamens and the pen stand out 3 to 4 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe koenenii is widespread in Jordan above the rock city of Petra on vertical sandstone cliffs.

The first description by John Jacob Lavranos and Kerstin Koch was published in 2006.

A nomenclatory synonym is Aloe porphyrostachys subsp. koenenii (Lavranos & Kerstin Koch) Lodé (2007).
