John Jacob Lavranos

John Jacob Lavranos (born March 29, 1926 in Corfu , † February 1, 2018 in Loulé ) was a botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Lavranos ".

Life

Lavranos studied law and economics at the University of Athens (Greece) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1948 . He was very interested in botany , especially succulents . Therefore he left for South Africa in 1952 . There he worked for an insurance company and in his free time completed a degree in natural sciences at the University of Witwatersrand . He also graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science .

His more than 14 excursions took him to unknown areas in the Arab world , Somalia , Socotra , Kenya and Tanzania . He was named a Fellow of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America in 1977. Lavranos worked closely with several well-known botanists, including a. with Werner Rauh , with whom he undertook several research trips (including South Africa 1961, South Arabia / Yemen 1964, Kenya 1979).

He is the author of over 300 initial descriptions of mostly succulent plants. Almost 20 species were named after him, u. a. Aloe lavranosii , Conophytum lavranosii , Echidnopsis lavraniana , Euphorbia lavrani , Caralluma lavrani and Sarcocaulon lavrani . Furthermore, the genus Lavrania Plowes from the family of dog poison plants (Apocynaceae) was named after him.
