BEIR Committee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BEIR Committee , full name of the National Academy of Sciences Advisory Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation, is a working group formed by the US Academy of Sciences made up of doctors and physicists that deals with the health risks of ionizing radiation in the low-dose range and in irregular Reports published at intervals. BEIR I (published 1972) was commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency to answer the question of the extent to which low-dose radiation exposure from nuclear tests and nuclear power incidents endanger the population. The assessments of that time have been revised several times. To this day, the BEIR reports are an essential basis of the international radiation protection regulations, including the limit values applicable in Germany according to the Radiation Protection Ordinance .
