BIGSSS

The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) is a graduate school of the University of Bremen and Jacobs University Bremen is operated jointly, and as part of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and the country is encouraged to promote science and research.

The BIGSSS emerged from the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) of the University of Bremen, which has existed since 2002 and is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, and the social science graduate programs of Jacobs University: Jacobs University's School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) and the Jacobs Center on Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development (JCLL). The main topic in the English-language doctoral training and research is "Changing Patterns of Social and Political Integration". The three subject areas of the BIGSSS are assigned to this main topic:

  • Global Governance and Regional Integration
  • Welfare State, Inequality and Quality of Life
  • Changing Lives in Changing Socio-Cultural Contexts

BIGSSS works closely with numerous renowned research institutions in the regional, national and international environment and is part of a worldwide network of programs for graduate education.
