History and technology
The Blue Pullman diesel multiple units were the first air-conditioned trains in the UK . The six-car trains used on the Midland main line from London to Manchester only had first class. Eight-car trains with first and second class seats were used on the route from London Paddington to Birmingham . Each of the two streamlined power cars had a MAN twelve-cylinder diesel engine with a GEC generator. Two drive motors sat in the rear bogie of the power car and two on the leading bogie of the next car. Later all vehicles came to the Western region and drove on the route from London to Bristol and from London to Swansea, preferably in business traffic. The Blue Pullman diesel multiple units were used until 1973.
