BRouter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A BRouter is a network device that combines the functions of a router and a bridge . BRouters were developed at about the same time as the Layer 2 switches in the early 1990s and were mostly used in wide area networks ( WAN ) as a gateway to other locations. BRouters were required because at that time non-routable protocols such as LAT , Netbios and SNA were widespread and were nevertheless used for communication across location boundaries. Thus one device (and one line) could be used for both protocol types - non-routable protocols were bridged, the rest (e.g. DECnet , IPX , IPv4 ) were routed. The name that is frequently used today for a similar device is Layer 3 switch , this is a different approach, it expands advanced high-performance switches with TCP / IP routing functionality (and vice versa). Locations for this are found in areas where, above all, high performance (high data throughput of the router) is required. The BRouter and Layer 3 switch seem similar, but the BRouter is more closely related to a multi-protocol bridge or a multi-protocol router.

Functional scheme

It acts primarily as a router for all layer 3 protocols of the OSI reference model known to it . The protocol information is taken from the layer 3 header of the data packet. If there is a protocol number that the BRouter supports, the packet is forwarded on layer 3 by routing .

The BRouter acts as a bridge if an unknown protocol number or no protocol number is available in the case of non-routable protocols . A BRouter that can only forward the IP protocol would therefore ignore the layer 3 protocol IPX and transfer these packets over its bridge. Likewise, all non-routable protocols such as B. NetBEUI routed over the bridge.
