Baareschesser monument on the banks of the Lahn

The term Baareschesser ("Baare" old German for toilet) comes from a tradition from the Middle Ages and is used in Niederlahnstein to denote the inhabitants.

history

There are two different attempts to explain the origin of the expression, which was originally a mock name for the Niederlahnsteiner.

The background to the first variant, which is also the basis for the Baareschesser monument (see below), is the fact that Niederlahnstein did not have any sources in the Middle Ages. Therefore, the inhabitants were dependent on the near-surface groundwater. In order to keep this clean, special procedures for the disposal of feces have been developed. According to this, "Baar" is understood as the name of a trough or box in which poorer residents in particular relied on, while wealthy households had septic tanks. According to legend, these Baare were emptied into the Lahn .

The other variant of explanation understands the word "Barre", according to the oldest traditional spelling of the mocking name, as the name of a sandbank at the confluence of the Lahn into the Rhine , which is derived from the French "Barrière".

tradition

The legend of the Baareschesser is anchored in the tradition of the town of Lahnstein. In 1992 the official monument on the banks of the Lahn in Niederlahnstein was inaugurated.

Furthermore, since 1989 it has been one of the highest carnival awards of the Niederlahnsteiner Carneval Verein eV (NCV) and is traditionally awarded to an active member in the second session.
