Bab Charki

Bab Charki ( Arabic الباب الشرقي, DMG al-Bāb aš-Šarqī ) is one of the entrance gates of the medina of Sfax . True to its name, it is located in the middle of the eastern city wall and opens onto the Jardin d'Oran and the buildings of the Tunisian State Railways on the opposite side of the Boulevard de l'Armée nationale .

On the inside, the gate leads up a staircase to Rue de la Driba. The simple round arch of the gate represents the most easterly point of the east-west central axis through the medina, which divides the urban fabric lengthways.

Bab Charki is the youngest entrance gate from March 1965 and is intended to relieve the area and facilitate access to the new town.
