Bab Gharbi

Bab Gharbi ( Arabic الباب الغربي, DMG al-Bāb al-ġarbī , German: west gate ) is one of the entrance gates of the medina of the Tunisian city of Sfax . It is in the middle of the western ramparts and opens towards the Picceville neighborhood on the opposite side of avenue du 18 Janvier .

This gate was built in 1936 to relieve the medina and to promote exchange with the new town outside the city wall. Since its renovation in 1960 , the gate has had a second, smaller side entrance next to the main portal. The entrance gate represents the westernmost extension of the east-west central axis through the medina, which divides the urban fabric lengthways.
