Baba (Orient)

Baba means 'father' in Turkish , Persian and Aramaic . It is still used as an honorable salutation in Turkish today.

In the Islamic culture, Baba is used as a title in Sufism from the 10th century . An example of this is Bābā Kūhī . Baba is also eponymous for the Bābāʾī movement . In the later Bektaschi - and Qalandar -Derwisch, the term was also used in the sense of a title. Examples of this are Koyun Baba or Gül Baba . This title is partly the preliminary stage to Dede ('grandfather'). The name can also be found among the Alevis .

In addition to its use in religious contexts, Baba was also used within certain professional groups. In today's language of Turkey, Mafia bosses are also referred to as "Baba". In the dialect dictionary , Baba is recorded as a term for leprosy .
