List of rose varieties

The Baccara rose (syn. 'Baccara', 'MEIger') is a deep red tea hybrid and one of the world's most famous and best-selling rose varieties .

Surname

Its name refers to the game of chance Baccara and was introduced in the spelling Baccará in 1956 in France and in 1957 in the USA. In addition, there is also the variant Baccarat as well as the names Jacqueline and Grand Prix , along with the registration name MEIger .

properties

The Baccara rose has an average diameter of approx. 8 cm and, in addition to the long stem, is particularly characterized by its deep red flower color. Although the single, double flowers (72–82 petals) give off only a slight fragrance, the color of the buds does not change after opening; With this characteristic, it became one of the most popular cut roses that had been in "every" bridal bouquet for decades. However, it is not winter hardy ( USDA zone 7b ) and was therefore mainly cultivated in Germany as a cut flower in the greenhouse .

Origin and history

The hybrid tea rose 'Baccara' was created in 1954 by the French horticultural family Meilland . Not only is it one of Meilland's great successes, but with over 25 million copies sold, it is one of the world's most successful varieties - after the variety 'Gloria Dei' , which also comes from this nursery.

Since the plant variety protection expired in 1974, the rose is no longer sold by the breeder. The displacement from the market is mainly due to their low volume yield in commercial cut rose cultivation.

Successors and related varieties

Meilland introduced the successor 'Black Baccara' - a deeply dark red variant that changes to red-black. It is also mainly offered in the cut flower trade, but was not as successful as baccarat. Varieties such as 'Grand Prix' (Select Roses BV) are new breeds of the last few years that have a similar flower shape and color, but are somewhat more productive. The tea hybrids 'Sonia Meilland' (Meilland 1970), 'Interview' (Meilland 1968) and 'Rose Dot' (Dot 1962) are also descendants of the Baccara rose .
