The Bad am Südpark was an indoor swimming pool in Essen 's Kray district between 1967 and 2014 .

history

The indoor swimming pool in Essen-Kray was opened on June 2, 1967 as Stadtbad Ost . Operated by the city, it was transferred to private organizations in 1989. On August 1, 2003, the Sport-Betriebs-gGmbH took over the business with the Essener Sportbund (Espo) as leaseholder.

A bathing report by the city from 2008 was followed by the council resolution of the city of Essen of November 26, 2014, which stipulated the closure of the bath at the end of December 19, 2014. Accordingly, the pool has been closed for financial reasons since December 20th of that year. Most recently it was visited by around 75,000 guests a year, including school, course and club swimmers as well as 25,000 swimmers during public opening times.

The bathing complex

The indoor pool has a multi-purpose pool that is 25 meters long and 12.5 meters wide and has five 25-meter lanes. It consists of a steel tub that is embedded in the swimming pool. At the western end of the pool there is a three-meter diving platform and a one-meter diving board. The water was mostly heated to 30 ° C.

There were fitness and gymnastics rooms under the swimming pool. Sunbeds and a sauna were also part of the equipment. Changing rooms and toilets were barrier-free. In the northern part of the building, the Bounty restaurant was located on the ground floor .

The interior of the eastern end of the swimming pool is decorated with the large-scale mural Ruhrlandschaft by the Essen artist Erich Pilz (1910–2005).
