The Bestwig depot (Bw Bestwig) was a depot on the Upper Ruhr Valley Railway in Bestwig .

history

The Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built a locomotive station in Bestwig in 1873. The Bestwig-Brilon-Wald ramp made it necessary to move many trains. A ten-hour roundhouse with a turntable was built. In addition, the locomotive station had a branch in Bredelar , from where it was pushed along the Bredelar-Brilon-Wald ramp. In 1915, the Bestwig depot was home to around 25 locomotives.

In 1918 one began to adapt the Bw to the growing traffic requirements. A new ten-hour roundhouse with a larger 20-meter turntable was built around 400 meters west of the old locomotive station. However, the new depot could only start operating in 1924. It was home to locomotives of the types P 8 , G 8 1 , G 10 , G 12 and T 14 .

With the beginning of the Second World War, the Bestwig depot received class 39 locomotives and later the classes 44 and 50 . In July 1945 there were still 48 locomotives in total, some of them badly damaged.

The east-west freight traffic, which came to a standstill due to the division of Germany, caused the withdrawal of the heavy freight locomotives with the exception of the 50 series. Bestwig received rail buses of the DB series_VT_98 series and steam locomotives of the 23 series .

In October 1968, the Hagen Gbf depot was added to the Bestwig depot as a branch. From 1971, the Bestwig depot was no longer home to steam locomotives. On April 1, 1982, the Bestwig depot lost its independence and was incorporated into the Hagen-Eckesey depot as a personnel deployment center. The turntable and the roof of the roundhouse were dismantled. Until the end of the 1990s, the track systems of the old depot were still used to park and refuel diesel locomotives. DB Regio NRW is now using the tracks of the former Bestwig freight station to clean, refuel and park their railcars.
