Railway depot Wuppertal-Langerfeld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former Wuppertal-Langerfeld depot was located on what is now the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line. This crossed the Dusseldorf-Dortmund-Süd and Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Opladen lines near Langerfeld . From 1910, there was a brisk through traffic of coal trains from the Ruhr area towards Remscheid and Solingen . and thus a provision requirement for operational steam locomotives , which at that time was provided by the Bw'en Barmen-Rittershausen (from 1930 Wuppertal-Oberbarmen), Wuppertal-Steinbeck and Vohwinkel . The Langerfeld depot was established in 1911 as a successor to the Barmen-Rittershausen depot, which was abandoned due to lack of space, and was primarily responsible for the provision of steam locomotives for regional trains used from Oberbarmen and Langerfeld. Many shunting machines also had to be provided.

At its highest level of development, the BW Langerfeld had, in addition to the supply, disposal and cleaning systems common for steam locomotives, two roundhouse sheds , whereby the western round shed built first had a turntable with a 17.55 meter and 25 roofed stand. The second round shed had a 23-meter revolving platform and 28 stands. Both sheds were partially destroyed during the Second World War . Two stalls of the western shed kept their roof and were used, the other parts were removed in the 1950s. In this area there were then many free stands. The part of the eastern shed at the exit was badly damaged and has been completely restored.

In 1950, the Langerfeld depot had 48 machines assigned to them or resided there. These goods:

With the introduction of electric train operations in the Cologne , Düsseldorf , Hagen and Dortmund areas from June 1964, the Langerfeld depot became superfluous and was closed. In the 1970s, the area was still partially used to park freight wagons and some museum vehicles until the remaining parts of the building were demolished in the early 1980s.
