Battambang train station
The Royal Station Battambang ( English : Royal Battambang Railway Station) is a disused railway station in Battambang , Cambodia . It was operated from 1953 to 2009 by the state railway company Chemins de Fer Royaux du Cambodge .
location
Battambang station and the decommissioned tracks are located on the Phnom Penh – Poipet (–Bangkok) railway on the west side of Battambang city .
building
The station building is well preserved and repainted after the line was closed. The clock above the entrance to the reception building has stood still since 8:02 a.m. on a day that has not been recorded.
The tracks are overgrown in places. Beyond this there are remains of dilapidated warehouses, signal systems and rail vehicles. Despite their poor condition, some of the buildings are used as residential, storage and business space.
Railway line
The railway line through Battambang had a gauge of 1000 mm (meter gauge ). It was completed by the Thais after French preparatory work during World War II . Battambang was part of Thailand during the war.
During the civil war in Cambodia , the railroad suffered heavy artillery damage and the Khmer Rouge destroyed the line in several places. In the 1980s, individual trains ran again between Battambang and Phnom Penh. The journey, less than 300 kilometers, took about fourteen hours. A road trip, however, lasted two to three days and was considered dangerous and arduous. The train service stopped in 2009.
The route is currently being upgraded again. Work on the line between Battambang and Bangkok is well advanced. After completion, freight trains will run on it.
useful information
The station of the so-called Bamboo Train was located about 4 km southeast on the same railway line . The bamboo train operation has meanwhile been given up, as construction work for the reactivation of the route has been taking place on the stretch since autumn 2017.
