Bucureşti North Railway Station
The Bucureşti Nord train station (Romanian: Gara Bucureşti Nord or Gara de Nord for short ) is the main train station in Bucharest and also the largest train station in Romania . It is a terminal station with 14 tracks . It was built between 1868 and 1872. The interior of the building was renovated after Romania's accession to the EU.
Both local trains (operated by Căile Ferate Române ) and international connections go to the North Station . Almost all Romanian main lines start or end in Gara de Nord. Bucharest's suburban trains going north out of the city start either here or at the neighboring Basarab station , which is connected by the subway.
The original name of the station was Gara Târgoviştei , named after the adjacent street Calea Târgoviştei (now Calea Griviței ).
The station is served by the Bucharest tram and several trolleybus and bus lines. There is also a station on the Bucharest subway , which is located directly below the train station and is connected by escalators . The M1 and M4 lines run here.
During the Second World War, Bucharest was bombed several times . The railway station in particular was an important destination for the Anglo-American air forces as a traffic junction for the transport of ammunition, fuel from Ploieşti and other war-related materials to Germany and the Eastern Front .
