The Wellington Station (English Wellington Railway Station ) is located in the New Zealand capital Wellington . The terminal station is the southern terminus of the railway line North Iceland Main Trunk Railway , the Wellington Auckland connects. Mainly lines of the suburban train network have their origin here and open up the Wellington region . The station is also frequented by the Northern Explorer (to Auckland) and Capital Connection (to Palmerston North ) trains, as well as the Intercity long-distance coaches. In 1933, in the middle of the period of economic depression in New Zealand from 1930 to 1936 , the decision was made to build a new central station and administrative headquarters for the railway in Wellington as one of the few railway construction projects. The station was built from 1934 to 1937 and replaced the two stations Lambton and Thorndon after the opening. At the time, the station was the largest building in the country and was also one of the first to be earthquake-proof . The station was designed by the architect William Gray Young in Georgian architecture . The Fletcher Construction Company took over the construction. The total cost of construction was £ 350,000.
